Abstract
Within the course of a week or day, one can now hear a litany of endings: the end of EU, the end of liberal democracy, the end of gender sexual racial uprising, the end of the human, the end of the planet. Western dreams seem to have arrived at the end of every road they set off on since the turn of the 19th century; and each of these roads peers over a steep cliff. What surprise that many people feel that an epochal end has been reached, that, if we are not at the end, we are inching quite close to many modes of ending, and all fairly bleak? But what is at the end? Or who?

Pivoting on two artistic projects - my ongoing membership in the Karrabing Film Collective and a graphically based exploration of familial inheritance in the shadow of radical violence and displacement - this talk outlines some differences between a social theory after the end and a philosophy of finitude and different affects that may cluster around them. In particular I want to contrast a stubborn after-ends to an anxious of-ends.
