Both the EU and various national funders have recently sought to ‘responsibilise’ science through the promotion of frameworks such as responsible research and innovation (RRI). This research explores how such frameworks, which typically emphasise responsibility to society, are encountered and put into practice at the level of the bench or office. What does responsibility mean to researchers, and how is it lived out in the contemporary university?
