Abstract

For true dissidence today is perhaps simply what it has always been: thought, Kristeva (1986, p. 299) claims.

This paper theorises dissident thought as a critical form of inner revolt. Situated in a context where internationalisation and intercultural strategies are high on university agendas, I argue for a cautionary revolt in the university, as a decolonizing framing of cultural orientations, encounters and Otherness.

Using Julia Kristeva’s notion of revolt as a provocative rupture of dominant orientations towards cultural Otherness in our higher education settings creates a nuanced, intricate need for re-negotiation. Rather than offering a conclusion, then, this argument suggests an ongoing, revolt-ful re-orientation towards the Other, and simultaneously to our – strategising, internationalising – selves.

The talk is arranged by the Centre for Higher Education Futures (CHEF).
