Anke Bueter – New Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas

Anke has accepted a position as associate professor at the School of Culture and Society from 01 January 2020.

Anke is a philosopher of science focusing on philosophy of medicine and psychiatry. In general, her research interests concern the intersections of science, society, and policy. Broadly, she inquires into how the epistemic success of scientific research and science-based epistemic practices (such as clinical medicine) is impacted by social factors.

In recent years, she has worked on issues in philosophy of psychiatry, such as the classification and notion of mental disorders. Moreover, she has published on the problematic impacts of commercialization and sexism on medical research as well as on the role of values in science. Currently, she works on issues of epistemic injustice in relation to mental and somatic illness. Varieties of epistemic injustice, in which a person’s contributions to an epistemic endeavor are ascribed less credibility than they deserve due to prejudices, are ubiquitous in medical practice and research. This can concern diagnostic processes, treatment decisions, agenda-setting in research, or even the development of conceptual resources to talk about experiences of illness.

Anke comes from a position at Leibniz Universitaet Hannover, where she has worked as assistant professor and served as PI in the research training group “Ethics and Epistemology of Science”. She has also conducted research at Bielefeld University, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Exeter.
