Karen Sivertsen received her PhD in history in 2007 from Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina. Her fields of concentration included: comparative slave societies, African American history, Atlantic world history and cultural anthropology. Upon completing her doctoral degree, she taught courses at various universities in the US and Middle East (United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia) that touch upon these scholarly fields.

Her research interests and current work encompass, but is not limited to: Early Modern British, Dutch and Danish colonial and imperial history in the “New World”; race, religion and the development of national identities in the Atlantic World; religious and cultural exchanges and construction among peoples of disparate cultural backgrounds, particularly “New World” societies in and around the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea basin; and racial hybridity and identity, racial and ethnic conflicts, colonialism, nationalism and empire/nation-building in the Early Modern and Modern eras.
