Welcome to a book talk by Anna Greenspan focusing on her just published monograph: China and the Wireless UndertowMedia as Wave Philosophy.  In this online talk, Greenspan will offer an introduction to the book, using the idea or figure of the wave to reimagine the relationship between China and wirelessness. The book examines waves of various scales, from the long slow rhythms of techno-cultural history to the high-speed frequencies of electro-magnetic machines.

The science fiction writer Chen Quifan endorses the book: “Anna Greenspan adeptly interweaves the concept of Wave, linking premodern Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist thought with today's rapidly changing, wireless China. This elucidates the historical and metaphysical underpinnings of contemporary Chinese media culture in all its intricacy. It leaves us keen to see where the waves of technology will carry China amid current geopolitical turbulence.”

China and the Wireless Undertow is published in the Technicities book series that is co-edited by Ryan Bishop and Jussi Parikka.

The Environmental Media and Aesthetics Program and DARC (the Digital Aesthetics Research Centre) are hosting this talk together with Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton) and Edinburgh University Press.
