Description: The current geopolitical climate points to an urgent need for digital sovereignty, defined as the ability to independently control our own digital environments. At the same time the AI boom leads us to increasingly rely on Large Language Models, which are almost invariably served by American and Chinese tech giants in gigantic, remote, centralized data centers, placing this important technology almost completely outside of our control both politically and materially. In this talk, I outline the state of the art in LLM technology, share my experiences with searching for alternatives to centralized Cloud providers, and demonstrate that recent technological advances make even large, state-of-the-art LLMs much more approachable than we think. I hope to foster a discussion where we consider our needs for LLM technology and take steps to reclaim this vital part of our digital environment.
