Summer is a time of living in the present, of enjoying the season of bounty. People have long come together in this easy season, to share and to learn, in a pattern informed by what has come before. We would thus like to take this opportunity to reflect on a theme common to much of the research across the CORE groups - History.
The past never sleeps, influencing research through cultural practices, existing organisational structures, data that has filtered to the present, and questions left unanswered by predecessor projects. Whether we work on projects focused on untangling the past or not, it is always influencing our work, in often bespoke and usually interesting ways.
As such, we invite everyone at CORE to present a short lightning talk (5-7 minutes) on History in today’s story, drawing on research questions, methods, and/or theory specific to your field to talk about how the past is informing the present. Present current work, wishful work, or fledgling project ideas are all welcome. Across CORE, many projects already engage with questions of the past in various and multifaceted ways. This event is meant as an entertaining and engaging way for all of us to interact, learn about the multitude of perspectives and approaches represented in CORE, and celebrate the coming of a new academic year.
As an extra twist, we would like to ask you to incorporate something about birds into your presentation. If you examine our keynote a little, you will understand why. There will be a prize for the best bird reference.
