Tracing Cultural Evolution Through Collaborative Storytelling: Fanfiction in the Age of AI

2026 — 2029

Project Description

My project centers around fanfiction and how cultural production is changing with the advent of AI. Fanfiction stories are communal, co-creative cultural products. Through reader-writer interactions, fans within a community can give each other feedback and effectively shape how individual fanfiction stories are told on an ongoing basis. Due to the centralization of fanfiction on individual platforms, I argue that fanfiction thus exists as a microcosm of how community interactions drive cultural evolution. As such, I will investigate the dynamics of how individual reader-writer interactions affect how fanfiction changes over time, and what the potential effect LLMs are having on this 'shape of change'.
