TEXT will investigate how the understanding of context, history and creativity changes with automated writing and assess new practices for working with generative AI 

This research theme investigates how generative artificial intelligence is reshaping creativity, writing practices, and the understanding of context and history in text production. The research will assess and develop new methodologies for integrating generative AI into writing while preserving human agency and originality. 

The capacity of AI systems to generate text that is both valuable and original presents new opportunities and challenges. While AI can enhance human creativity, the fundamental nature of machine-generated innovation remains a subject of debate. This work package will examine the collaborative potential of AI in writing, assessing how it influences, for example, idea generation and stylistic experimentation. 

The research team will conduct empirical studies with professional writers and communication specialists. These studies will involve co-creative experiments where AI contributes to different stages of the writing process alongside structured assessments of the quality and coherence of AI-assisted texts. The work package will also analyze transcripts of writer interactions with AI. Computational and hermeneutic approaches will be applied to evaluate how AI-generated content aligns with human literary standards and creative aspirations. 

Through mixed-methods research, the team will assess best practices for AI-assisted writing and track long-term shifts in writing habits. By synthesizing insights from, e.g., historical co-creative traditions and business applications of AI, the project will establish a framework for understanding and guiding AI-human collaboration in writing.
