Research

Dale Carter’s research interests focus on the growing appeal, social presence, political engagement and cultural standing of American popular and vernacular music between the 1950s and the 1970s. His work has appeared in journals such as Popular Music, Rock Music Studies, Popular Music History and the European Journal of American Culture. His most recent book is Reading Smile: History, Myth and American Identity in Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks’ Long-Lost Album (Routledge, 2021).

Teaching activities

Dale Carter teaches and contributes to courses on American history, politics and society, contemporary topics in American life, and Anglo-American popular and vernacular music and society. He is affiliated with the School of Communication and Culture’s Historical Studies of Arts and Culture (HISTAC) and Cultural Transformations research programs, as well as its Danish Centre for Popular Music Culture (DANPOP).
