Research

The central focus of my research is the Danish language, both in its standardized form and in its geographical and social varieties. My investigations include texts dating as far back as the 14th century, and a significant part of my work is historically oriented—approached from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Adopting a functional theoretical framework, I examine the linguistic system primarily at the morphological, syntactic, and topological levels, occasionally incorporating phonetics and phonology, but always situated within a semantic and pragmatic context.

A key principle in my research is that the different levels of language should not be analyzed in isolation, but rather understood as interrelated components that interact across domains. Consequently, I place particular emphasis on the broader textual context in which smaller linguistic units are embedded. In this way, both language and the language user are brought into focus. Grammatical forms and constructions are analyzed with regard to their functional potential in use, rather than merely being described at the level of form. Swedish, German, and English are also incorporated where relevant, for example in connection with contact-induced linguistic influence.
