This years Christmas Seminar is featuring Associate Professor, Troels Myrup Kristensen, with a paper on “Alahan: Religious Landscapes and the Scales of Mobility”:

The paper takes a new look at the late antique religious complex at Alahan (Isauria, Türkiye) by applying theories and methods from the “mobilities turn”. It re-assesses Alahan from the perspective of two different scales of mobility.

Questions relating to Alahan’s macro scale of mobility have been discussed at considerable length in previous work, in particular in relation to how we should characterise and label the site: Is it, as Michael Gough argued, a monastery? And does Alahan qualify as a site of pilgrimage?

While these are important questions, the focus here will be movement to and within the site self, that is, the micro-scale of mobility. This scrutiny of Alahan’s archaeology, not only the dynamics of its religious landscape, but also the site’s assemblage of movement architecture and the different types of infrastructural moorings that we can identify.
