“The role and position of sound and sounding art in public urban spaces” is a presentation which will take the audience on a sonic trip to three different cities: Berlin (DE), North Adams (US), and Sheffield (UK). Main subject is the contemporary sonic public urban environment and the role sound artists can play in (a) raising the auditory awareness of residents and users of these spaces and (b) changing (improving?) the sonic environment. Rationale grounding the presentation is a new sonic ecology which goes beyond the ideas formulated by R. Murray Schafer some 40 years ago.
