Abstract

What does it entail to listen with feminist ears? 

The dissertation Feminist Ears: Listening to Sound, Body & Gender aims to develop and explore the notion of a feminist ear and how such an ear can listen to sound, body, and gender as being entangled with power structures and cultural normative understandings. Drawing on sound studies, gender studies, and cultural studies, the dissertation unfolds the becoming of a feminist ear by exploring topics such as echoes of #MeToo, sounds of consent, sonic sexism, and walking in gendered bodies. 

The main research question asks what it entails to listen with a feminist ear, and how a sound studies perspective can support the development of, and attunement to, novel feminist listening attitudes or tactics. Secondly, the dissertation asks how the body matters as part of being a sounding and listening subject, as well as how listening is gendered and how we can account for it.
