Ülo Valk (Universty of Tartu), ‘On Vernacular Hinduism in Contemporary Assam: Construction of the Supernatural and Contested Beliefs’

The lecture will focus on some aspects of vernacular Hinduism on the grassroots level. It will discuss the traditions of village healers and wizards (bej), which has become famous as a centre of magical practices, and explore how magic and the supernatural is constructed in local narrative traditions.

Followed by a work-in-progress session of:

Sujata Banerjee (University of Calcutta), ‘The Development of Engineering Education in India: An Institutional History, 1901-50’
