Drawing on 15 years of teaching, as well as the compiling and editing of numerous books, including the recent Companion to Anthropology of Education (Wiley-Blackwell), this lecture will provide an overview of the key insights, concepts, perspectives, and debates in the field of educational anthropology. Rooted in the U.S. context, but taking stock of other national traditions as well, Levinson emphasizes dynamic and productive disagreements, rather than consensus, in the field. He will also discuss his theoretical and practical preference for the term “field,” rather than “science” or “discipline,” to describe the production of knowledge in educational anthropology as a form of social practice.
