Martin Arvad Nicolaisen has joined Global Studies for a 2-year post.doc position with the PEPP II (Port Effectiveness and Public Private Cooperation for Competitiveness in Ghana) research project, financed by the Danish Foreign Ministry and lead by Associate Professor, Annette Skovsted Hansen.

Martin has a background in Anthropology with a PhD from the Department of Ethnology at Copenhagen University. The topic of his dissertation was a qualitative study of the Ghanaian commodity chain of cocoa, focused on informal income generating opportunities among people working at the fringes of the established businesses.

Martin has likewise been a team member of the first phase of the PEPP project at AU from 2019 to 2021, where he, among other things, contributed with ethnographic fieldwork among public and private stakeholders at the Port of Tema in Ghana. In the new PEPP II project his research at Tema will emphasize the topic of sustainability and the linkages between the levels of policy and daily operations, as well as between the maritime sector of Tema and the port’s hinterlands. For the purposes of this research, Martin will be based in Ghana for about one year in total.
