Join the first event by the new research center Uses of the Past (UPAST) for a conversation between three researchers who will discuss different approaches to engaging with a colonial past.

Frank van Vree is Professor Emeritus at the University of Amsterdam and former director of the NIOD Institute of War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies. He led the research programme Independence, De-colonization, Violence and War in Indonesia, 1945-1950.

Astrid Nonbo Andersen is a Senior Researcher at DIIS (The Danish Institute for International Studies) focusing on the relations between Denmark and its former colonies as well as demands for apologies and compensation. At the moment, she works on the research project Truth and Reconciliation in the Nordic Countries.

Thea Bladt is a PhD Fellow at Aarhus University whose research centers around colonial redress and commemoration in Denmark, the Netherlands, and the US from 1990-2022. She was also part of the team behind the NIOD Institute and Columbia University’s Racial Redress Mapping Project carried out in 2022.
