Public Lecture with Professor Bishnupriya Dutt, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi India

Feminist practices in post-colonial India, particularly feminist dramaturgy have radically deconstructed western canons which dominated the colonial and post-colonial repertoire. Instead of making shifts through translations and adaptations as the first generation of theatre makers did after independence, the feminist interventions made a direct leap from the canonical texts to create performance texts with dramaturgy ingrained in the process. Often working intensively, individually and collectively to create performance texts, they have successfully denigrated iconic authors and canonical texts, created ruptures and established their own authorial presence. In the process they have explored aesthetical explorations which underlines how theatre can be made in a political way.
