Abstract: Truth seems to be the aim of belief just as the good seems to be the aim of actions; and reasons seem to help us achieve these intrinsic aims of belief and action. In this talk I am going to reject this simple picture and propose a different one according to which truth is for belief what success is for intention. This has repercussions for our view of practical and theoretical reasons and rationality.
